Smooth leather is the term used to describe all types of leather, whose grain side is the visible side, regardless of the strength of the natural grain of the animal.
Calfskins have a very fine grain, crocodiles a very stron grain. The top is always a "smooth leather". Embossed or coated split leather is also referred to as smooth leather, because the optically equivalent to the smooth leather. Actually it is no smooth leather, because the scar side is not processed to the outside.
Calfskin has a much finer grain structure than crocodile leather.
Smooth leather are available in many variations: [[[Leather grain - Grain side#Types of graining: fine pore leather - coarse pore leather - fine grain leather - coarse grain leather|fine grained, strong grained]] or gloss or dull.
