Alcantara

Alcantara is not a type of leather, but a trade name for a microfibre fabric originated in Japan and made from polyester and polystyrene. Microfibres are very fine fibres. 10000 metres of fibre weigh less than 1 gram. Currently Alcantara is produced mainly in Italy.

Alcantara has a very fine fabric structure that looks and feels similar to suede. Therefore, it is often mistaken for genuine leather.

In its country of origin, Alcantara is also known as "ECSAINE", and in the US as "Ultrasuede". It also appears frequently on the Internet with the spelling "Alkantara".

Alcantara is sometimes perforated, and fabric is visible through the holes.

Alcantara weighs only half as much as real leather. It can be washed with neutral detergent in the washing machine at 30 to 40 degrees Celsius. But do not spin! Let it dry on its own and brush it after. Alcantara can be ironed with low temperatures. But always put a white cloth between the iron and the Alcantara. Be very carefully with the temperature! Alcantara is very heat sensitive!

An advantage of Alcantara is that it can be cut in several layers one above the other. The structure of Alcantara is absolutely uniform, so unlike real leather, there is less wastage. Common uses of Alcantara are the clothing, furniture and car seats.

Bei Autositzen werden von einigen Herstellern die Mittelbahnen der Sitze mit Alcantara bezogen und die Außenflächen (Flanken) mit Glattleder. Wenn die Kombination mit Echtleder ist, spricht man beim Auto von einer Teillederausstattung. Da solche Kombinationen von den Herstellern oft als Alcantara-Leder-Ausstattung bezeichnet werden, denken viele, es handele sich um Leder, weil "Alcantara-Leder" so verstanden werden kann.

Eher selten: Lenkrad im Mercedes mit Alcantara und Leder - Audi mit Alcantara-Lenkrad.

Pilling in Alcantara

Typisch sind die mit der Zeit auftretenden Knötchen und das Ausfilzen in den Verschleißbereichen. Das Phänomen der Knötchenbildung wird Pilling genannt. Durch die Reibung auf der Oberfläche verknoten sich die aufgerichteten Fasern zu Knäulen oder Knötchen. Auch im Bekleidungsbereich kommt es zu diesen "Wollmäusen", worauf auch manchmal auf den eingenähten Informationen hingewiesen wird.

Häufig wird das Phänomen auch „Peeling“ genannt. Es ist aber eine Wortverwechselung. Als „Peeling“ bezeichnet man die Entfernung der oberen Hautschicht.

Fading of Alcantara

Alcantara bleicht nur sehr selten aus. Eine Nachfärbung ist dann nicht möglich. Da es Synthetik ist, haften Farbstoffe nicht an der Faser. Aufgetragene Farben färben wieder ab.

Ausgeblichenes Alcantara ist eher selten.

Neben Alcantara gibt es noch viele andere Stoffarten, die wie ein Rauleder aussehen. Es muss nicht Alcantara sein. Daher immer prüfen, um welches Material es sich handelt. Die häufigste Immitation von Leder ist das auf der Oberfläche glatte, aber genarbte Kunstleder.
