Thick leather is leather with a thickness of more than 1.4 millimetres. Normal upholstery leather generally has a thickness of only 0.9 to 1.2 millimetres. An exact determination of the thickness of thick leather is not possible, as the thicknesses of leather varies up to 20 percent due to the heterogeneous skin texture. Bull hides often have a deep grain structure, which also makes accurate thickness measurements more difficult. Standardized measuring instruments are used to define uniform measuring methods.
