The term "upholstery leather" is mainly used in conjunction with furniture leather. However, the term includes all areas where leather is processed on upholstery. Upholstery leather also includes car leather, boat leather or leather in buses, airplanes and trains.

As upholstery leather, large skins (due to the large areas) are used by robust animal species (due to load). This is mainly cow leather, because it is sufficiently available and has the necessary characteristics since thousands of years.
