The railway companies also equip some trains with leather covers. In 2022, the German Bahn decided to switch from leather to fabrics in first class, which will probably lead to more cleaning effort because fabrics have to be cleaned much more laboriously than wipeable pigmented leather.

Aircraft leather

Leather used in aircraft must meet strict flammability and fire retardancy of leather (flame resistance, smoke density, etc.) standards. The leather must be treated during tanning in order to meet these requirements. Such leathers are also used for helicopters.

To save fuel, aircraft leather is made extra light (light weight).

Aircraft leather is subject to strict controls and must be certified for aviation. Not every leather manufacturer can supply the aircraft industry. Suppliers of aircraft leather must meet and check the requirements for the aircraft industry. Organizations such as www.easa.europa.eu are responsible for approvals and certifications.
