One common by-product derived from rawhide is dog chews. Dryed rawhide is parchment. It is basted, twisted, coloured and flavoured to create the products that most dog owners purchase to prevent their dog chomping on their couch or chair leg. The chew bones do not splinter like real bones and are therefore not hazardous. Th chewing bones are made of cow leather and buffalo hide. Most are tmade of split leather and then pressed into shape.
