Objects made of donkey leather are not known. The skin of donkeys is processed in China to produce gelatine. This is then processed to produce traditional medicine. This raw material is called "ejiao" in China.

Since the keeping of donkeys in China reduces, the skin of donkeys is smuggled. In 2015 1,200 hides of donkeys from Karachi in Pakistan were seized in Hong Kong. Exports were banned because donkeys were illegally slaughtered or poisoned and the skins and the meat were offered with false declarations.

In 2016, several men were arrested in Botswana who illegally tried to sell donkey skins in Hong Kong and China.
