In many African countries, belts, bags and other accessories made of elephant leather are offered. The WWF advises tourists not to buy such products.
In Namibia and South Africa trade with elephant leather and hair products is allowed since 2004. But the import to Europe subject to strict conditions against a tourist violates quickly. For the legal export from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana CITES documents are required. Who can be sure that the obtained documents at a market at the holiday destination are accepted at an import inspection?
In Germany occasionally appears elephant leather from big game hunters. The elephants are shot in Africa. There, the skin is tanned. The tanned skin is brought back to Europe where it is processed.
Occasionally, furniture or shoes are offered with the material description "elephant leather". Almost never the leather of elephants is meant. Only the embossing or grain of the leather is particularly strong and reminds of genuine leather elephant.
Especially with online offers is not explicitly stated that it is not real elephant leather. Better ask and make sure what it really is.
Normally, leather dealers don`t offer elephant leather.
