Leder ist ein formbares Material. Für bestimmte Einsatzzwecke wird Leder daher verformt. Sei es bei Prägungen um eine bestimmte optische Änderung zu erreichen oder um runde Formen für Hüte oder Bälle zu erhalten oder als Kunstwerk. Aber auch für Schuhe oder Sattel werden Leder vorgeformt, damit das Leder seiner Bestimmung gerecht wird.
Zum Verformen werden i. d. R. Werkzeuge oder Formen benötigt, aber auch die Verarbeitungstemperatur, die Feuchtigkeit des Leders bei dieser Bearbeitung, der Druck mit dem das Leder in die Form gepresst wird und die Zeit spielen eine Rolle, wie stark und haltbar das Leder verformt wird.
